HERstory: Catherine Flon is a heroine of the Haitian revolution, as she is known for sewing the first Haitian flag. She is seen as a symbol of feminism for many Haitian women because of the role she played in 1803.
Made HERstory: Wanda Tima-Gilles has created a platform for Haitian Americans to feel accepted through uplifting stories that features many influential Haitians. Her contributions have been noted to inspire others to affect change in the community.
Made HERstory: Edwidge Danticat is a writer whose moving and insightful works across many genres enrich our understanding of Haiti and the complexities of the immigrant experience. Her novels represent the essence of the strong-willed community.
Making HERstory: Fanm Vijilans utilizes her creative ability to express emotion. As a self taught artist, her vision to overcome struggle exemplifies that of a Haitian woman. She manipulates different mediums to create abstract paintings that displays varying emotions. She hopes to continue her art as a means to display her experience while impacting others.
Making HERstory: Fanm Reyisi is a progressive women that strives to help improve health equity for immigrants. Her drive and dedication highlights the core of a Haitian women. She has completed her post doctoral fellowship and is an assistant professor, where her focus is on research centered around reducing mental health disparities amongst immigrants. She will continue her research, as a NIH funded researcher.
Making HERstory: Fanm Konesans is not only the First Miss Haiti Florida, but also the founder of Mel’Inspirit, LLC, and the author of AMALGAM. She stands for representing culture and creating her own definition for who a Haitian women is. Her future aspiration is to become a lawyer with the purpose of impacting change in the community.
